GWC Warranty Guide: Coverage Plans, Claims, and What to Know Before You Buy
What Is GWC Warranty?
GWC Warranty sells vehicle service contracts (VSCs), often called extended auto warranties. They are sold through authorized car dealerships across the United States. Third-party sources describe the company as founded in 1995, and its own materials use the tagline “No Worries. Just Drive.”
A VSC is not a true warranty. It is a separate contract that pays for covered mechanical repairs after the manufacturer’s coverage ends or when a used vehicle has none. GWC’s own legal language says the product is distinct from any manufacturer or seller warranty and does not extend an original warranty.
It also states that buying the contract is optional and not required to finance, purchase, lease, or register a vehicle.
GWC Warranty Coverage Plans
GWC offers four tiers. Each tier builds on the one below it.
Powertrain Plus covers core components: engine, transmission, drive axle, and, on electric vehicles, the traction motor and gear reduction. It also includes base coverage for braking, cooling, air conditioning, electrical, and steering.
Essential adds the fuel system, heating, and EV cooling and braking, with broader coverage for the base systems.
Comprehensive expands to suspension and the hi-tech/convenience group, plus EV high-tech components. A technology package and a luxury package are available as optional add-ons for an extra charge.
Exclusionary is the top tier. It covers all vehicle components except those specifically excluded in the contract. Luxury coverage is an optional surcharge item here too.
Coverage Comparison at a Glance
| System | Powertrain Plus | Essential | Comprehensive | Exclusionary |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Engine, transmission, drive axle | ✔ | ✔ | ✔ | ✔ |
| Braking, cooling, A/C | Base | ✔ | ✔ | ✔ |
| Electrical, steering | Base | Base | ✔ | ✔ |
| Heating, fuel system | ✘ | ✔ | ✔ | ✔ |
| Suspension, hi-tech/convenience | ✘ | ✘ | ✔ | ✔ |
| All components except exclusions | ✘ | ✘ | ✘ | ✔ |
All four tiers include the same convenience benefits: towing, 24/7 roadside assistance, substitute transportation, and trip interruption. Restrictions apply, so check the contract.
Optional Exclusionary Wrap
This option covers parts protected by the basic manufacturer’s warranty, except those under the powertrain warranty and those listed in the contract’s “What Is Not Covered” section.
Mileage and Vehicle Eligibility
Stated-component plans cover vehicles up to 200,000 miles. The Exclusionary plan covers vehicles up to 150,000 miles. A third-party seller lists eligibility as up to 20 years old and 200,000 miles. Eligibility varies by plan and state, so confirm it with your dealer.
GWC says coverage extends to electric vehicles, commercial vehicles, rideshare vehicles, medium-duty and lifted trucks, and other eligible vehicles.
Does GWC Warranty Start Right Away?
Yes. GWC states that coverage begins the day of purchase with no waiting period.
How to Buy a GWC Warranty
GWC sells through participating dealers. You add the plan when you buy a vehicle, or ask your dealer whether they offer GWC. Dealers can price plans differently, so ask for the full contract, not just a brochure, before signing.
How to File a GWC Warranty Claim
- Call customer service or find a shop. One source lists the claims line as (800) 482-7357 and points drivers to GWC’s service map to locate a repair facility. Confirm the number on your own contract.
- Choose a repair facility. You can use any ASE-certified mechanic or GWC’s preferred network.
- Have the shop contact GWC. The shop gives GWC a repair estimate before work begins.
- Pay your deductible. GWC pays the repair shop directly, and you owe only your deductible and any non-covered items.
Get claim approval before any repair starts. Unauthorized work is a common reason claims are denied under service contracts in general.
What Do Customers Say About GWC Warranty?
Feedback is mixed. Expect that for any VSC provider, because people tend to review after a claim.
Positive: One reviewer said GWC dealt directly with the shop on payment and processing and called the claim process hassle-free. A dealer on GWC’s own site described a stranded customer being directed to a garage and repaired within 24 hours. Keep in mind that dealer testimonials on GWC’s site are marketing.
Negative: Several ConsumerAffairs reviewers say GWC denies claims or asks for documentation of past maintenance. Another reviewer said labor was covered at only three-quarters of the shop’s cost, which pushed their out-of-pocket cost above the deductible. Others said the plan was not bumper-to-bumper and excluded electrical parts.
Ratings snapshot: One third-party seller lists BBB at 1.3 stars from 44 reviews, ConsumerAffairs at 1.1 from 364, and Trustpilot at 3.4 from 109. Birdeye shows a higher average. These figures change often, so check the live pages.
Most disputes trace back to three things: the plan tier, labor-rate limits, and maintenance records.
Is a GWC Warranty Worth It?
It can make sense if you:
- Are buying a used vehicle with no remaining manufacturer coverage
- Would struggle to absorb a surprise repair bill (GWC’s own page cites water pump repairs around $1,033–$1,091 and alternators around $1,065–$1,324, based on retail averages that vary by shop and location)
- Choose a tier that matches the parts most likely to fail
It may not be worth it if the vehicle is still under factory coverage, or if you choose a low tier and expect it to cover electronics or suspension.
Before You Sign: Checklist
- Read the full contract, especially the “What Is Not Covered” section
- Ask what the deductible is and whether it applies per visit or per repair
- Ask how labor is reimbursed and whether there is a labor-rate cap
- Find out what maintenance records you must keep
- Ask about cancellation and refund terms
- Confirm the issuing provider named in the contract (it can differ by state)
- Remember that purchase is optional and can be declined
