Rheem Warranty Guide: Coverage, Registration and How to Claim
Rheem Warranty Guide: Coverage, Registration and How to Claim
Rheem makes water heaters, furnaces, air conditioners and heat pumps, and each product line has its own Rheem warranty. The terms depend on the model and on whether you register the unit. They also depend on whether it is installed in a home or a business. This guide covers what each warranty includes, how to register and verify yours, and what to do when something fails.

Rheem water heater warranty
Rheem tank water heaters carry warranties from six years up to a limited lifetime, depending on the series. The main tiers are:
- Classic: 6-year limited tank and 6-year limited parts, with the tank coverage extendable to 10 years through ProtectionPlus.
- Classic Plus: 8-year limited tank and parts.
- Prestige: 12-year limited tank and parts.
- Marathon: lifetime limited tank warranty and 6-year parts for the original owner in a residential application, once you complete online registration. Commercial use drops to a 5-year tank and 1-year parts warranty.
Hybrid and tankless models follow separate certificates. Rheem lists 10-year tank, 10-year parts and 1-year labor for residential electric heat pump water heaters. Its gas tankless certificate gives 12 years on the heat exchanger, 5 years on parts and 1 year on labor. Electric tankless units get 5 years on the heat exchanger and 1 year on parts.
One point to understand before you buy: a tank warranty usually covers the tank itself, not the cost of the plumber or the damage a leak can cause.

Rheem heating and cooling warranty
Rheem’s furnaces, air conditioners and heat pumps use a conditional warranty, which depends on registration.
- Gas furnaces: the Classic series R801 furnaces list 10 years of conditional parts coverage (registration required) and a 20-year heat exchanger warranty. Some furnace certificates go further and cover the heat exchanger for the original purchaser’s lifetime. That lifetime coverage depends on the conditions in the certificate, and it drops to a fixed term if the furnace is sold on or not installed in a residential application.
- Air conditioners and heat pumps: Rheem’s residential packaged units list 10 years of conditional parts coverage and a 10-year compressor warranty, plus a limited lifetime stainless steel heat exchanger on gas/electric packages.
- Without registration: the standard limited warranty on most parts is typically five years, so skipping registration can cost you half the coverage.
The conditional parts warranty does not cover labor. You pay the technician unless you add labor protection.
How to register your Rheem warranty
Registering is the most important step you can take. To register:
- Find the model and serial numbers on the unit’s data plate.
- Go to Rheem’s warranty and registration page (registermyunit.com is the registration site named in Rheem’s certificate).
- Enter your product details, installation date and contact information.
- Save the confirmation and your installation invoice.
Watch the deadline. Rheem’s current certificate requires conditional warranty registration within 90 days of installation or closing. The Marathon water heater page also gives 90 days. An older Rheem press release mentions 60 days. Treat the shorter window as your target, and register as soon as the installer finishes.
Rheem can withdraw a registration if the system was installed in conflict with applicable codes or regulations. Use a licensed installer.
How to verify your Rheem warranty
Rheem’s warranty page has a verification tool for products that are already registered. You need the serial number to use it. Keep your registration confirmation and purchase or installation invoice with the unit’s paperwork.
How to make a Rheem warranty claim
- Contact your local Rheem Pro. Rheem directs customers to its independent professionals for warranty service.
- Have your serial and model numbers ready.
- Show proof of registration and installation if asked.
- Ask about labor. Parts coverage and labor coverage are separate, so confirm what you will owe before work begins.

What Rheem warranties don’t cover
- Damage, malfunctions or failures caused by misuse or improper installation.
- Shipping costs.
- Required maintenance.
- Labor, outside the 1-year labor terms on certain hybrid and tankless models.
- Products where unapproved third-party accessories were used (see the certificate for details).
- Commercial installations, which receive much shorter terms than residential ones.
Rheem Protection Plus extended warranty
Protection Plus is Rheem’s extended coverage program. It works differently for HVAC and for water heaters:
- HVAC: it can extend coverage up to 10 years, starting when your Rheem limited warranty expires. Its service agreements cover mechanical and electrical failures, including the compressor and heat exchanger, with parts and labor included. You can cancel within 30 days for a full refund.
- Water heaters: the ProtectionPlus tank upgrade adds four years to the limited tank warranty. Rheem says it does not include labor or parts coverage, and it is not transferable.
Some third-party reviews describe the water heater kit differently, so confirm with your installer what the upgrade covers before you pay.
Is the Rheem warranty worth it?
The warranty is solid on paper, but the conditions decide its real value. Register right away, keep your records, and use a licensed installer. Then decide whether labor is a risk you want to insure. Labor is often the biggest part of a repair bill, and standard coverage mostly leaves you to pay it. If that gap worries you, compare the cost of a home warranty, which can cover labor on top of a manufacturer warranty.
FAQ
How long is a Rheem warranty?
It depends on the product. Tank water heaters run from 6 to 12 years, and Marathon models carry a lifetime tank warranty. Furnaces and AC units typically carry 10-year conditional parts coverage.
Does the Rheem warranty cover labor?
Usually not. Labor is limited to certain models (1 year on hybrid and gas tankless water heaters), unless you add a labor plan.
Do I have to register my Rheem product?
For the longest terms, yes. Registration is required for conditional coverage on HVAC equipment and for the Marathon lifetime tank warranty.
Is the Rheem warranty transferable?
Often only in a reduced form. Original-owner benefits such as lifetime coverage usually shrink to a fixed term for later owners, and the water heater ProtectionPlus upgrade is not transferable.
How do I check my Rheem warranty?
Use the verification tool on Rheem’s warranty page with your serial number.
